Microarrays Lite

It just doesn't have the detail I wanted.
There's a lot to like here. Stekel covers everything, starting with selecting the probes and printing the arrays. Next comes raw array analysis - scanning, image processing, and measuring the effects of the array itself on the results. That covers the first six chapters. The next three go over analysis of the result, one more chapter covers experimential design, and the last chapter discusses storing, labelling, and sharing the data. Some of those topics, like experiment design, address issues that most other authors neglect.
Still, I came away feeling that I had read only half of each chapter. Going back, it turned out that I hadn't missed anything that really was there. I missed a lot, though. For example, probe selection includes a discussion of self-hybridization - good stuff. It stopped short of giving me any clear idea how much self-complementarity is too much. It mentioned DNA melting points, but without enough information for me to understand what is really melting, or how or why to choose one melting point over another. Handling of raw array data discussed Loess regression as a way to cancel out process differences across a single array. Again, it's good stuff, but what exactly is a Loess regression? Expression analysis mentions Spearman correlation as an alternative to Pearson correlation - it give Pearson's formulas, but not Spearman's. Later, when the author does give a "formula" for selecting sample sizes, it turns out to be some macro reference for some stat package. Throughout the book, I felt the same lack: I learned the names of many things, but not what they really are.
Maybe this book is OK for a first introduction. If you've had that introduction and want to take the second steps, this book probably won't meet your needs.

Mildly disappointing

I'm not a biologist but became curious about the microarray technology. Although the book seems to cover the important aspects (as far as I can tell from browsing), it managed to annoy me. The author did not make effort to provide something very basic like a clear vocabulary.

Example: he starts using "spot" and "feature" without making effort to explain what they mean in the context of microarrays. At times it seems he treats them as synonyms which is confusing. I consulted the index hoping to find somewhere precise definition of these terms but to no avail. At the end, I had to go to Wikipedia and various other pages which did the job but then if you have to use internet to understand the book than why not just get everything from the web and save the money for the book?

Noting that the target audience are novices in the area of microarrays (experts won't find anything valuable here), the book does a poor job of serving them. To recap: "Nice try. Could do better"

Neat little book on microarrays

Without question this short paperback is a nifty little text. What it does is provide the beginner with a basic brief overview in covering all major aspects of microarrays.

What you have to keep in mind is this book is intended for those who want a brief overview of all aspects of microarrays. Its a "forest for the trees" book on microarrays. The writing is very good and easy to follow, and its a great introductory text and reasonably priced.

Regardless of ones formal training, (e.g. Biology, Statistics, Computer Science, ... , health science) I think it would make an excellent little basic reference on ones bookshelf or to just have around in the lab for undergraduates/beginning graduate students.

Bottomline: If you prefer to learn things by starting at the start and not at the end then consider this book; Indeed its a great starter book to get your feet a little wet before jumping in over your head to the more gnarly stuff.

As a reasonably new student of Sanskrit, I have been using an earlier edition of this book occasionally and have found it most useful. However, I have found this version to be excellently presented, clear and very easy to work with. It is also a particularly supportive reference for the Sanskrit student when used as a companion volume to the Sanskrit Dictionary by the same author. I have no hesitation in recommending both books to students of Sanskrit, at any level.

Topics considered include the expansion of a German reading public, Jewish emancipation, the formation of socio-moral milieus, working-class leisure, the expansion of the public sphere, the rise of consumer co-operatives, gendered attempts to fashion the "new" liberal man, and degradation rituals in the 1920s. Presenting to English-reading audiences the fruits of cutting-edge research conducted in Saxon archives since 1989, the contributors offer innovative ways to reassess the larger sweep of German history.
This book serves as a how-to guide for the study of any region in history. Beyond its primary appeal to European historians, it will also speak to students and scholars in comparative politics and sociology.

About the Author

Phil Ward is a decorated combat veteran commissioned at age nineteen. A former instructor at the Army Ranger School, he has had a lifelong interest in small unit tactics and special operations. He lives on a mountain overlooking Lake Austin with his beautiful wife, Lindy, whose father was the lieutenant governor to both Ann Richards and George W. Bush.

Those Who Dare

Those Who Dare is a good war story. Something blows up on the first page and the action is more or less constant throughout. The characters are the kind of people you would like to go to war with. You get a rare look at the evolution of pin-prick raiding and how No.1 British Parachute School and the Commando Special Warfare Training Center in Achnacarry, Scotland trained Combined Operations troops, which is something I've never seen in fiction before. I'm ex-SF, Ranger, Jumpmaster and have been there and done that, got the scars to prove it. I recommend this book.

pleasant surprise

Novels are almost never on my reading list. My preference is for non fiction, solid history with facts and research. Novels make me think I am wasting time. Those Who Dare was recommended by a family member. A novel, and a war story to boot, not for me. But in a weak moment I picked up, and then could not put it down. Great story with just enough facts and research to give credibility. Kudos to a new author. Will be waiting for the next book.

WEB Griffin Meets Downton Abbey . . .

. . . for those of us with a sweet tooth for the vintage WEB Griffin "Corps" and "Brotherhood of War" series, the new "Eagles" series by Phil Ward fits the bill nicely. Griffin was the master at writing compelling "war" fiction . . . with virtually no action or battle scenes. Could never figure out how he did it. According to Griffin, WWII and Korea were both won through the efforts of dedicated, no-nonsense warrior types who spent as much time downing scotch and bedding babes than they did bagging bad guys overseas. But that's OK: Griffins work was readable, fun and strategically and historically accurate for the most part. It was high grade crack for military fiction fans.

Phil Ward's approach is similar in "Eagles" - we get up close and personal with a group of hard-drinking, resolute and patriotic commandos as they work their way through off-the-books raids and behind the lines shootouts with the Germans. Here the setting is Great Britain during the early days of WWII when much was in doubt. The women are lusty, beautiful, well-connected and veddy, veddy English. They can also handle a Colt. 45 and jump out of planes. Brilliant! The men drink like fish, train like Tarzan and get the girls. And they are really good at offing Hitlers best in well-planned covert raids. We follow the group through training, planning and -YES - actual commando and battle action. There's also plenty of meetings with fusty upper-crust British intelligence and high level officer types in sprawling English mansions: you almost smell the dust, the Indian rugs and the whiskey.

In sum, an interesting and entertaining series from a guy who obviously knows the commando business. I'll keep reading.
