Finally!

English readers can begin to explore Islamic texts directly. Shah Wali Allah writes in a difficult style; Hermansen smoothes the way considerably. The biographical introduction is helpful. Rather than try to re-interpret Islam for themselves, modern Muslims should spend their time and energy learning from those who used their monumental knowledge and experience for the task. Another layer to add to the complexity of "orthodox Sufism." Paperback in the works???

I Love What You Do For Me, Rabbit Angstrom

Having become enamored with Rabbit Angstrom through this magnificent tetralogy, I was sad to see the end finally come. Rabbit with his highly unlovable ways, his crude sexuality, his ethnic slurs, his disdain for the "dumb mutt" he married, all would normally tend to turn someone off, and yet Updike has made this anti-hero an endearing and enduring creation. Rabbit is the 20th century man in all his dysfunctional glory, who in spite of his many shortcomings, is like an old friend we are immensely fond of and want to keep up with.

Though all the books are well-written, it is in this fourth and final installment that Rabbit and Updike both reach their peak and mesmerize the reader. Rabbit at 55 is feeling the pains of a lifetime of beer-drinking and cholesterol-laden foods. While on an outing with his granddaughter, he suffers his first heart attack and thus begins his long trip into the valley of death and the nostalgic trip down memory lane that so often precedes that.

Looking back on his life, he decides it must be a religious tie that kept him with Janice as he can think of no other reason. Rabbit and Janice are now leading "the good life" and while cocaine-addicted son Nelson runs Springer Motors, the senior Angstroms spend six months of the year in sunny Florida where Rabbit golfs and Janice plays tennis and attends a women's group regularly. It is Janice that has changed most, making the best of her life with Rabbit while enjoying the carefree existence of a snowbird. It is surprising to Rabbit when he discovers that, though outwardly together, to herself Janice will always be the woman who drowned her own daughter.

Rabbit is still deeply interested in American history, but it is his personal history that haunts him-the daughter he thinks is his, the daughter he knows is his but died, the son he can never connect with. When Rabbit commits the ultimate betrayal of his son, he does what he does best, he runs. In classic Rabbit style, he ignores his problems, ignores his doctor's advice, ignores the laws of common decency, and becomes his one and only soulmate.

Rabbit's final run and his last days are some of the most angst-ridden yet best-written pages in contemporary American literature. If anyone ever wants to know how it was to come of age in 1950's America and live through the 1990's, they have no better blueprint for tracing events than the story of Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom.

Life catches up with him

Rabbit at Rest is a wonderful book, what more can I say?

During the reading of it, I continually wanted to pass judgment against Rabbit and characterize him as a "bad" person, but I couldn't. Rabbit at 55 years old isn't "bad" - he is a product of 55 years of life and sadly, he cannot seem to figure out how to change himself and get on a smoother road to peace & happiness, even though he wants to, he should, and knows he should.

Rabbit is a man stuck in routine. He talks down to Nelson, obsesses about infidelity, disregards his health, and sees Janice as a "dumb mutt" because he always has and doesn't know how to live his life any other way.

This book makes you think about how many of us there are who just can't figure out how to break out of our routines, even when those routines are unhealthy and killing us. We're all scared of change, just like Rabbit.

They grow up and they never change

In this book, the Angstroms are semi-retired and living in Florida. Rabbit has a heart condition and he's not doing anything to improve his health. His son Nelson has grown into a wreck of an adult, to which Harry and his wife deserve the lion share of the blame. The parents are so old and respectable now, you forget what they put their son through, until he reminds them. You really want to root for Harry to overcome all of the obstacles he faces, like you root for charming outlaws to outrun the posse. You sense that Zeus and the Gods are sitting on Mt. Olympus using Harry Angstrom as their plaything. Despite the fact that Updike is given literature status (this book won the Pulitzer), it's very easy to get into. This isn't long and arduous James Joyce prose, but an easy to follow modern day story that will make you think. The series is either a scathing indictment of latter 20th Century middle-class America that invents their own agony or it's just Updike's view of how normal people live. Whichever, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys serious fiction.

This book is one of the best resources to teach high intermediate students. As a teacher, I like the second Edition much more than the third Edition and there is no difference with the 4th Edition so I will keep using this edition until it is whether all sold ou or out of printt. A great resource even if you are teaching a speaking class for those who need to get a little bit better when using structures.

Lem's cornerstone, here at last

Dazzlingly brilliant, Summa Technologiae is Lem's speculative nonfiction masterpiece, written in 1964 but not translated into English until now. It contains the intellectual seeds of most of his subsequent work, and ideas that very few science-fiction writers were even touching at the time (nanotech, evolutionary biology, virtual reality, complexity theory, the "singularity", etc.). The penultimate section, "The Creation of Worlds," is one of the most mind-expanding things I've read in some time, tying evolution, cosmology, technology, and language together in an epic analogy.

Fans of Lem's later Imaginary Magnitude and A Perfect Vacuum will find many of their ideas already present in Summa. Lem is not as pessimistic here as he would later become. While hardly a techno-booster, he's more concerned here with possibilities than likelihoods, so he does indulge in some best-case fantasies at times--which are still not *that* sunny.

Here's what he has to say: "Civilization lacks knowledge that would allow it to choose a path knowingly from the many possible ones, instead of drifting in random tides of discoveries. The discoveries that contributed to its construction are still partly accidental. ... So it is not a question of condemning of praising technology but rather of examining to what extent we can trust its development and to what extent we can influence its direction."

Not terribly reassuring. The sections on virtual reality ("phantomatics") and artificial life ("imitology") are lighter on the gloom and feel quite prescient.

Many thanks to Minnesota and the translator for putting this out in English. While not necessarily the best place to start if you're new to Lem (try A Perfect Vacuum for a more digestible, Borgesian form of some of Lem's ideas), Summa contains Lem's brilliance in the most concentrated form. It is absolutely essential for Lem fans and for anyone interested in authentic, hard-nosed futurism, rather than posthumanist cheerleading.

Be prepared to work at it

This was a solid read and not something that I anticipated when I first read earlier reviews in the New Scientist magazine.
It turned out to be a discourse on evolution from two different viewpoints, bio-evolution and techno-evolution. The first is well understood but one needs to have your attention drawn to the second, which is very different, in that it can be reversed with all the cultural consequences, while the former can not.
Be prepared to work at this book as the author introduces all sorts of new and newly created vocabulary, but don't be put off. It is well worth the time spent reading it.

An historical oddity - very much "dated" in one sense, since this translation into English has come decades after its original publication, but on the other hand, it is a compelling reminder of Lem's power as a prophet. So he talked about "phantomatics"... which we now call "Virtual Reality". Lem isn't the easiest to read, but you can't discount him as a futurist.

Stop thinking about your idea - and build it

When you've got an idea for an app and haven't done "real development" it can be completely overwhelming to figure out where to start. Most tutorials focus on singular code samples ("how to print hello world") but don't really teach you how to truly start your own application.

Hello Web App is written around this concept - how to practically, quickly, and manageably create your first web app.

This is a fantastic guide for anyone who is not a developer and has an idea that they wish they could build. The format - "collection of things" - is incredibly flexible and gives you a fast and easy way to start "sketching" out your application without getting overwhelmed by a lot of technology.

For me, Hello Web App got me to build my first web app that has been sitting in my head for 7 years. If you have a similarly nagging concept/thought that you wish you could implement, pull the trigger and get this book.

Perfect guide for beginner programmers

In a world where all of the programming resources are written for other programmers, it's refreshing to have a guide to bridge the gap for people who are just getting into the space.

Lots of crisp screenshots, clear code examples, easy to follow narrative. Most importantly, Hello Web App emphasizes building something tangible early on so that you're motivated by your creations and keep moving forward. Recommending this book to anyone I know who has been trying to learn how to code and build web applications.

Easy to follow, practical, and overall awesome

I've done a little bit of coding, but wanted to take the next step and get into a framework that would let me build a full app. I tried a few online tutorials, but a lot of them make certain assumptions and go deep into the weeds about certain technical details that you may or may not want to know about. Hello Web app is completely unlike other tutorials I've found, and I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to start building their app right away.

If you have little or no experience with coding, you should take a few weeks to get up to speed on the basics (there are plenty of free resources to help you do this, with some suggestions in the book). However, if you've picked up a little bit of Python already, anyone should be able to easily follow along with each example. The practicality of the book was something I liked as well, and something that I find lacking in a lot of other tutorials. Most guides will show you how it works, but leave it up to you to apply the knowledge. Hello Web App is basically a line-by-line walkthrough on creating a "collection of things" (good example project since you can tweak it to fit a lot of practical applications), and if you have a little bit of basic HTML/CSS background, you can make something that looks fairly professional in just a few hours.

This is a great book for anyone looking to create an MVP for their business or project, which Tracy talks about early on. If you want to get into the nuts and bolts of Django and the MVC model of app frameworks on a technical level, this is probably not for you (although it could be a good starting point!). I really can't pick out anything negative to say, except that I would like a *little* bit more detail in some areas. But like I said, that's not the point of this book, and there are plenty of other resources for getting to that next technical level, so I can't knock points off for what's really my personal learning preference.

Great book overall, very engaging and super easy to follow along. I would 100% recommend it to someone who has an idea and wants to start building it right away. Awesome stuff!
