A Lucid Overview of Art in Context

This book is a marvelously wide-ranging foray into art as practiced from prehistoric to modern times. What sets it apart from other surveys is the care the authors have taken to place art and artists in their cultural, political, and religious context. (For instance, the economics and theology of medieval Christendom are discussed as a background that focuses more sharply the true significance and accomplishment of the Gothic cathedral.) The book also provides time charts for each chapter, and sidebars quoting primary sources and contemporary responses to art. Over 1,300 illustrations, maps, and diagrams are included. In elegant and readable prose, the authors explore the creation of art not only through time but also across continents. Art from the Americas, Africa, and the East (Near and Far) are discussed in addition to the more familiar Western European masterpieces. I consider The Visual Arts: A History to be a lucid, thorough, and wonderfully written account of the impulse toward and creation of art as it has developed throughout history and within different cultures.

About the Author

The Boxcar Children Series was created by Gertrude Chandler Warner, a teacher, when she realized that there were few, if any, books for children that were both easy and fun to read. She drew on her own experiences in writing the mysteries. As a child, she had spent hours watching trains near her home, and often dreamed about what it would be like to live in a caboose or freight car. In each story, she chose a special setting and introduced unpredictable, unusual or eccentric characters, to help highlight the Aldens’ independence and resourcefulness. Miss Warner lived in Putnam, Massachusetts until her death in 1979.

This book gives a clear and thorough insight into fire protection in Hydrocarbon processing facilities. It provides the informaiton about performance based design approach which use engineering analysis of hazard, as well as requirements from related code. Excelente resource for those who are looking for guide for the develop of a fire protection strategy in the hydrocarbon processing facilities. From team management, risk assessment and analysis, fire protection fundamentals and finally inspection and testing. It is not a manual to design fire protection systems to the wide range of equipment involved, but it is a guide to understand the overall risks involved in this industry. We will always require the final use of fire protection standards like NFPA.

Amazing books for Greek mythology

I teach gifted third graders and have been reading the Myth-O-Mania series out loud for years. Once kids know basic Greek mythology they can appreciate the humor and "twists" these books offer. I use the books as a way to teach satire/parody.
They were out of print for a long time and I used to scour used bookstores for them. All the books in the series are great. My top two are Have a Hot Time Hades and Phone Home Persephone. My colleague loves Stop that Bull Theseus.
In Have a Hot Time Hades, we learn about the first Olympians. They are called the belly bunch, as they were all swallowed by Cronus. When Cronus is tricked and swallows a rock instead of Zeus the belly bunch play kickstone with the stone.
In Phone Home Persephone readers learn that Persephone wasn't kidnapped but hitched a ride to the underworld. She wants to get as far away as possible from her annoying mother, Demeter. Demeter keeps calling P-phone constantly to keep tabs on her.
These books are a must for any kid who likes Greek Mythology, creativity, and humor. The series gets 5 stars hands down!

It's been a struggle getting my daughter to read but she has really taken to not only this book but the entire series. For the first time ever she says she can't wait to come home from school so she can read a book!

Ruined by poor transliteration into the English alphabet

I'm a big fan of Lonely Planet phrasebooks because they pack a lot of practical information into an efficient format. Usually I'm especially impressed by the grammar section at the front, which gives the fearless language learner just enough info to plunge in.

This title in the series unfortunately has a fatal flaw: while it uses actual Hindu, Urdu, and Bengali script through the phrasebook sections, it doesn't use them in the grammar sections. Furthermore, the roman transliterations don't accurately represent all the sounds in the languages (for you language geeks, they don't distinguish the dental/retroflex and aspirated/unaspirated consonants). Imagine if a Japanese speaker tried to learn English from a book that merged L and R, then multiply that problem several times over.

Consequently the grammar section is useless. The phrasebook section is useful for pointing at text on the page but very misleading for speaking or understanding.

I also question squeezing Bengali into a book that's busy enough with Hindi and Urdu.

Pity! I hope LP corrects this in future editions.

This book will be fine for looking up phrases on my flight, but as an off-the-cuff use, will be difficult. The book isn't organized particularly well (e.g. sections), so I can imagine I'll have trouble using it as a reference.

Ursula K. Le Guin was born in Berkeley, California, in 1929. I stumbled across this book in my local library and I was so glad I did. “Craft enables art.” This book brings the deepest understanding of how craft enables writers to elevate their writing beyond the mechanics and execution. Yes, Le Guin addresses danglers and misplaced modifiers and point of view issues. Masterful Guidance from a Prose Master

This is a clear, concise, and absolutely splendid book on the craft of writing, with chapters on sound, punctuation and grammar, sentence length and syntax, repetition, adjectives and adverbs, verbs, point of view and voice, and other topics particularly relevant to the working fiction writer. I especially liked the chapters on point of view and "Crowding and Leaping". Includes several exercises and suggestions for workshops.

Great examples and exercises, with memorable one-liners

Ursula Le Guin’s Steering the Craft is so much more than just another book on writing. This craft is a yacht steered on ocean waves, not a rubber toy bobbing in the tub. And this book is filled with wise advice, clear and well-described examples, and great exercises for people who don’t just want to write—they want to write well. It’s a book for people who love “the sound of language” and long to remove whatever is “ugly, unclear, unnecessary, preachy, careless... what doesn’t work” from their own pages to make them sound like music.

With excerpts from authors as diverse as Rudyard Kipling and Patrick O’Neil, or Zora Neale Hurston and Jane Austen, with exercises that feed into and build on each other, and with a nicely nuanced approach to grammar and other tools of the trade, the author assists our writing, so our writing can assist other people’s reading, and so the whole will be something worth both reading and listening to.

Memorable one-liners stay in the mind long after reading. Authors are reminded to take responsibility for what they write—nothing happens “somehow” without the author’s intervention. Memorable asides make lessons long-learned finally make sense—did you know grammar and punctuation exist to assist sound? And each reader will surely have their favorite lesson and favorite point. For me, the reminder that story comes first, not conflict, is a lesson that will ease my conflicted writing of tales.

Highly recommended; enjoyably readable; and filled with the sort of exercises every writing group should take time to tackle; Steering the Craft is a must-add to any writer’s bookshelf.

About the Author
SAM DJANG writes novels and poems. He is an historian specialized in the history of Genghis Khan. For the literary side, he was much influenced by authors like Boris Pasternak, Guy de Maupassant and Ernest Hemingway. Extremely interested in history, his research focused on Genghis Khan and his Mongol empire which, he believes, was the positive turning point of the world history that helped create the modern world.

Well researched, poorly written

I've not read this author before, but I have read a great deal about the various Khan empires. While the historical research here seems above average for authors in this genre, the story is lacking. The flip back and forth between "telling" the story and allowing the story to develop through the characters is frustrating.

Great read about a great individual

Perhaps we are too comfortable to understand why Temujin had the need to fight, to conquer the world of his time. Perhaps we are too removed from the vast quietude and stresses of the Mongolian plateau and its life supporting requirements. Author Sam Djang invested more than eight years in the study of the cultures, environment, history and philosophies of that period of time when the Mongol tribes united and conquered the world.
Genghis Kahn, The World Conqueror, attempts, in two volumes, to provide us with an insight into that everyday individual, social, and political time and place. Written simply, gentle winds and sunrises give way to "gail, hail and dusty brown clouds." The nomadic life of Mongolian tribes was harsh, and the belief that a man had to fight or die sustained them.
Traveling along with the tribes, wandering through the lands, seasons and lives of individuals, the reader grows into an understanding. Stories told to children influence the wars and decisions of grown men and nations. Drawn inexorably forward, the reader is led to understand how the empire of Genghis Khan evolved into the greatest and largest our world has known.

This fascinating book reminds me why historical fiction is worthwhile. By taking certain liberties, the author is able to make the reader feel like a contemporary witness. We care more about the characters. The charming episode describing the first meeting of the young Temujin and the little girl destined to be his wife is worth the price of the book. The author makes learning fun.
