About the Author
Craig Elevitch has been working for island resource self-sufficiency since 1989. He directs Agroforestry Net, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to empowering people in agroforestry and ecological resource management. The organization's internationally recognized publications have guided thousands of readers in becoming more proficient in ecological food production, agroforestry, and reforestation. Craig edits The Overstory, a monthly agroforestry journal with 8,000 subscribers in 185 countries. He has coordinated numerous workshops and field days for Pacific island agroforestry, with over 1,500 farmers and resource professionals participating since 1993. His books include Agroforestry Guides for Pacific Islands (2000), The Overstory Book: Cultivating Connections with Trees, 2nd Edition (2004), Traditional Trees of Pacific Islands: Their Culture, Environment, and Use (2006), and Specialty Crops for Pacific Island Agroforestry (2011, in press), all of which promote diverse agricultural systems that include trees.

Informative, interesting, and accessible

If you are looking to develop a holistic understanding of the potential of agroforestry, this is a great book.

Numerous related topics are covered, resulting in a comprehensive overview of agroforestry techniques and the issues surrounding them. The book explores the economic, environmental, and community potential of agroforestry systems.The chapters are written by different authors in their areas of expertise. The writing is clear and digestible to all readers, not just the academic crowd.

Look through the Table of Contents to see how many different topics are covered. I have enjoyed reading The Overstory and continue to use it as a reference. One can only hope that the author goes on to make a 3rd edition!

Overstory contains many stories...

This is one of my favorite how-to books, featuring numerous well written, science and fact based articles on all things to do with tree planting, agroforestry, analog forestry, ecoagriculture and just plain common sense. Great articles on species selection, practical methods of doing things, common sense processes and scientific background all combine to make this a valuable resource in any library. A must have in my opinion.

The Overstorey Book

I bought this book to add to my collection of Forest Gardening books, and was a little disappointed. The book is a collection of previously published papers, grouped together by subject heading. As such,there is no continuity, and a lack of depth, because each paper,is quite short.
The articles themselves are interesting, but with a real emphasis on tropical/sub-tropical applications, which have little relevance to my own situation. This was not clear from the description, which is why I am writing this review.
If you are interested in tropical/sub-tropical agroforestry, you will probably find the book interesting. If not, then you would be better advised to spend the money on Edible Forest Gardens, by Jacke and Toensmeier, or Creating a Forest Garden, by Martin Crawford.

The recipes are easy to prepare and fast to cook. A lot of new recipes given in this book that are not really on the usual menu list in a restaurant. Now, I can cook some dim sum recipes at home and enjoy it with my family instead of going into a restaurant just to eat dim sum meals.

Read before making any life-altering decisions

Even if your marriage isn’t at risk DON’T DIVORCE is an important read. It highlights the power of the divorce industrial complex (one couple’s divorce is another man’s paycheck) in addition to the media myths that nurture the insidious “grass is greener” mentality. Dr. Medved also includes strategies for safeguarding marriages (useful even for the happiest twosome) and evidence against the myth that an amicable divorce could be “better for the children”—it almost always isn’t. Would definitely recommend if you (or people you love) are considering splitting.

To say that I enjoyed reading Don't Divorce may sound a little weird considering the fact that I am in a happy marriage for over 35 years. However, what I found most interesting in Dr. Medved's crisp and well-documented presentation were the lessons here for the happily married couple. Moreover, this guidance was communicated not in any sort of way that mocks someone who is currently unhappy. Dr. Medved’s book is a reminder that marriage is the merger of two individuals and of the critical, unending importance of being thoughtful and kind to your partner.
I would recommend it urgently to those with marriage challenges, and “importantly” to those couples who are happy but have the good sense to always be looking to strengthen their marital bond.
