Vanek, Ph.D., is Senior Lecturer and Research Associate in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University, where he specializes in energy efficiency, alternative energy, and energy for transportation. Wonderfully nostalgic

I absolutely LOVED this book. Even though it is a little before my time, I could feel time fall away while reading it. Marnie does such a wonderful job telling her story that I felt I was transported back in time to a simple more gentler place. I could hear the loons calling to each other, I could hear the raindrops falling in the forest on those rainy days, I could feel the excitement of the square dances, feel the sun on my shoulders while swimming in the lake. Marnie makes you feel as if you are back in time experiencing the joys of summering in a cabin on a beautiful lake. She introduces you to people that lived a kinder life than today. The wonderful pictures included let you "see" this story unfold. I did not want this beautiful book to end, and wish it were 1,000 pages long. This book is like holding a time machine in your hands, letting you go back in time to those long ago summers when you were a kid. If you want to be transported to a beautiful time and place, read this book. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Return to Childhood

Like the previous reviewer I, too, LOVED this book (the caps are not being melodramatic). It covered exactly "my era" and "my geography" - we were a Chicago family that vacationed in Wisconsin (don't most?) in the '50's and '60's. I saw my life history through the author's eyes. When she talked about the dinners and picnics her parents shared with family and friends, I recalled my parents' laughter and pure enjoyment of sharing good times with their family and friends, too. Although I certainly identified with a whole bunch of "things" in the book that are rapidly becoming anachronistic like a screened-in porch or an aluminum fishing boat, the heart of the book is the connection with nature and people that only a vacation getaway and loving parents that sacrificed a whole bunch for us kids can provide.

Because I moved away 40 years ago from the Midwest, I haven't re-experienced the meanings of our summer vacations in Wisconsin since then - until I read this book. Her descriptions are so well-written I often found myself vividly returning to the important parts of my childhood. I am certain many readers will, too.

Being Up North

My parents were from Hayward, but I only lived there during my father's one-year "tours" in Vietnam and a summer during college. I had never stayed in a cabin until last year when two of my sisters and I decided it was time to go back, five years after our father's funeral (both parents are buried in Greenwood Cemetary).

Our vacation in the northwoods wilderness was magical and so relaxing, even though our cabin did have television and other modern conveniences (we had to go into town to get internet access, but it didn't seem urgent).

I could really relate to the paragraphs about shopping on Main Street. We didn't mind the long walk into town, and we could spend hours wandering through the stores.

So reading this book made me want to get in a time machine and go back in time. Last year was such a revelation about having a strong connection with nature and not being so "wired" all the time. My dream would be to live in the northwoods in the summer and some place warm in the winter. Thank you, Mrs. Mamminga, for this beautifully written memoir.

Excellent tool for true beginners

Fresh out of college with my first "real" job, I went in search of a book aimed at someone with absolutely no investment experience or education. This book has served my purposes perfectly. Aimed at the small investor, this book helps you create a portfolio appropriate to your financial needs, with the result that you are able to start planning for the future without getting in over your head. Easy to read, written in layman's terms with explanations of the basic investment jargon. If your looking to take responsibility for your finacial future, but don't necessarily want to be immersed in Wall Street, this book is for you.

Greatest resource for new investors

This book is the best book on investing I have ever read. It is filled with numerous addresses, phone numbers, and websites with a wealth of investment knowledge. Her illustrations and definitions of various investment terms were the clearest I have seen. I read the entire book in less than 24 hours. I have never saved a dime in my life, but this book inspired me to get a savings account, a CD, and I'm looking for a broker in order to invest in mutual funds. Anyone who needs information on investing should buy this book.

Helps the student progress from understanding what materials to use to making actual drawings

My sixteen year old daughter is seriously interested in becoming an architect and this book is a great resource for her. William Spence has provided an excellent text for people to learn about architectural drawing in all its beginning aspects.

The 24 chapters and 19 appendices fall into three broad sections. The first 9 chapters teach the student about the tools and materials used by architects to make their drawings, technical sketching, various drafting techniques, the basics of computer graphics workstations (this material is dated, but still good as an introduction), using the computer for architectural design and drafting (again, dated material but the process is still sound), architectural drafting standards, reproduction of drawings, the preliminary design process, and contract documents.

The second section encompasses chapter 11-24 and teach the student about drawing foundations & footings, floor - wall & roof construction (separate chapters for light construction and commercial buildings), the title sheet and site plan, floor plans, foundation plans, architectural sections, architectural details, elevations, roof plans & framing plans, schedules, electrical plans, heating & air-conditioning systems, plumbing plans, and pictorial drawing.

The third section are the 19 appendices that provide abbreviations, selected metric conversion factors, and many different kinds of symbols used in drawings as well as ratings, load information, and various tables as well as a glossary.

The chapters present the material effectively and helpfully. They teach the student knew terms, sometimes provide a glossary, the questions act as a chapter review, and the laboratory projects present the student with drawing challenges that help build skills and confidence necessary to move to the next chapter.

I can't draw a straight line with a ruler, and yet the material here makes me want to learn to draw this stuff. So, it must be motivating!

Experimental Approach Difficult for Most Undergraduates

I teach molecular biology at a respected liberal arts college in Indiana. As a first year molecular instructor I went looking for advice on textbooks. Under recommendations from the previous instructor of this course I chose Weaver's book as an alternative to the now aging Albert Text. Frankly, the text has been a flop.
Why? Because it assumes a certain level of understanding of molecular coming into the course. A highly motivated student who has a strong background in research will enjoy this book, but as a general text it just doesn't work well. I find my students are just lost in the chapters. They are getting bogged down trying to work through all the gels and are missing the concepts being presented. I find that I must use figures from Albert's or Stryer (Biochem) to make the concepts clear. Perhaps it would be a good grad textbook with a student population that has an excellent understanding of 'gel science'.
Mostly I find it is just missing in general concepts. They summarize sections up in little orange boxes at the end which seems to be all the class seems to understand from the readings. I think they need to put more effort into making the general text more understandable to students by working on the model end and less on the experimental end.
I am not alone in my poor evaluation of this text. A prof who has been teaching the class for 15 years finally made the switch to this book this year to replace Albert. She gave up on Weaver two weeks into the class because of her class' fustration.
I would recommend this book ONLY to those who have first read it and feel it is going to be PERSONALLY useful.

An Excellent Text, But Not For Beginners

I have used this text as an undergrad and now as a grad student (in the interest of full disclosure, I am currently taking a class with Dr. Weaver and we are using this text; surprise, surprise). I found the use of experimental data to be extremely helpful, especially since molecular biology is an experimental field. It really gives one a feel for how we arrived at what we know and what was the thinking that led to it. That said, this is probably not an ideal text for an introduction to molecular biology. Students using this text should have some familiarity with genetics and cell biology. When I used this text as an undergrad (at a liberal arts college in Kansas) I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of experimental information at first, but I grew to appreciate it greatly. It allowed me to better develop analytical skills that are important for the field. On the whole, this has been probably one of the best books I have seen in this field.

Advanced Undergraduate Textbook

Molecular Biology, 4th Edition, by Robert F. Weaver

As an undergraduate science student in college, I understand the importance of having the right textbook that will effectively complement what is being provided during course lectures. To provide a little background information, this textbook was required for a third-year molecular biology course at a major public research university. According to the two instructors of the course, Molecular Biology by Weaver would be extremely thorough in covering all of the major topics in a one-quarter molecular biology course. If being used as a stand-alone textbook for students trying to gain an understanding of an introduction to molecular biology, Weaver's Molecular Biology might not be the ideal solution. Although I do not intend to discourage other students from purchasing this textbook, I should offer a warning that students should be prepared to spend a decent amount of time reading through sections of this textbook. I should note at this point that I have very mixed feelings about this textbook.

In writing this review, I am going to assume that the target audience for this textbook will be third- to fourth-year life science undergraduate majors or graduate students. As I previously stated, this textbook is by no means a CliffsNotes for understanding molecular biology. Many of the major experiments carried out in the field of molecular biology were discussed in detail in this book, notably the Meselson-Stahl experiment that demonstrated the semi-conservative replication mechanism for DNA. To be more precise, it is the experimental molecular biology portions of this textbook that are extremely detailed. A cursory examination of this book will indicate to any reader that there is an abundance of diagrams and illustrations. From a student's point of view, I find this to be particularly useful in that I am not only a more visual-oriented learner, but many of the diagrams provide decent summaries of what is trying to be conveyed by large blocks of text.

One of the major nuisances I found in this textbook are the seemingly redundant chapter summaries. After each section within a chapter a short summary consisting of a few sentences is offered to provide a type of overview for what was just discussed. At the end of each chapter, the "Chapter Summary" is simply a compilation of all of the summaries from each section in that chapter: essentially the chapter summaries are copy-paste collections of the section summaries. I cannot emphasize how infuriating it is when attempting to study for an exam and when reviewing only to encounter a gigantic block of text. Let this serve as a warning for those using this book to study for an upcoming exam: unless you create your own personalized summaries of each chapter, be prepared to pretty much read through entire chapters again in the supposed summaries.

To be fair, the often excess amount of details provided for some sections of the book are useful. The Meselson-Stahl experiment, when first presented to me in lecture, was particularly confusing, for one reason or another. The author went to great lengths to elucidate this experiment within the book. Many of the sections on DNA replication, transcription, and translation were very thorough and well-written, and provided the much-needed clarification from confusing lecture notes.

As an undergraduate science major in his third year, I am willing to accept that an undergraduate education is meant to provide an introduction of sorts to a particular field of study while simultaneously attempting to educate you in the humanities. However, this textbook is what I would deem to be much more advanced for any undergraduate course. By no means is the author at fault for providing an excellent introduction to molecular biology, but course instructors and other personnel at the departmental level should be more weary of selecting textbooks such as this one.

The goal of this work is to validate the SPH method for turbulent and compressible problems which occur in automotive engines, and to bring an expertise of its performances and abilities for engine problems. Starting with a 3D quasi-incompressible SPH code, named SPARTACUS 3D, and developed at EDF (France), the aim of the thesis work is to modify this original SPARTACUS code in order to be able to simulate turbulent and compressible flows that appear in combustion chambers of engines.
