Why Are They Angry with Us? Essays on Race, by Larry E. Davis

FROM THE INTRODUCTION:

Race is what I always have thought most about. In fact, I have been thinking about race as long as I can remember thinking about anything. Race was very much a topic in our home and, most probably because of this, it became my primary tool for analyzing life. Much as the Marxists used economics, I have used race. Virtually all of my thinking on religion, politics, crime, conomics, neighborhoods, and relationships has employed race as a cutting stone to dissect and try to understand them. As a seven year old boy, I remember asking myself, If we (black people) were slaves, why are they (white people)
angry with us? This question stayed with me into my early thirties and into my doctoral studies at the University of Michigan. Some two and one-half decades after I first formed this question, I finally found what, for me, was a satisfactory answer to it.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Now, more than at any time since the 1960s, issues about race have taken center stage in America. From the killing of young black boys, to the travesty of mass incarceration, America is every day presented with evidence that the struggle for equality and justice is far from over. This book responds to many of the timely, sensitive, and often uncomfortable conversations that are taking place on our television screens, the front page of newspapers, on Twitter, and in homes around the country.

Why Are They Angry With Us? attempts to resolve the questions and conflicts about race in America that have plagued our country from the days of Jim Crow, through the battle for civil rights, and remain with us today. The author's personal journey and his professional scholarship have lead him to an understanding of our collective history. This collection of eight essays relates racial incidents and observations to address the deep misunderstandings our country holds about race and attempt to explain the workings of race and racism in America. These essays attack the core of many commonly held attitudes which contribute to racism in America.

Review

"Larry E. Davis is a leader in social work and social welfare on the discussion of race and racism. In his book he draws from personal experiences and examples that provide readers with frameworks that will enhance their knowledge of race, racism, and racial relations in the United States. His essays support both classroom learning and social work practice. I think this book makes an important contribution to the social sciences." - James Herbert Williams, University of Denver

"Why Are They Angry with Us is written so engagingly, it is sure to reach people that would otherwise ignore it. This book is well grounded in academic perspective and it's so important to confront these myths and explain them through theory and evidence. " - Jacqueline B. Mondros, SUNY Stony Brook University

This book was incredible, such insight on race, in addition to being well written. It is clear, insightful and intriguing. This author addressed issues that as an African American women who grew up in the 1950s I had thought about, but never discussed with anyone. He offers a clear perspective on race and an understanding of Racism. When I put down this book, I felt enlighten.

Truly eye-opening
By Anna
The title comes from a question that struck the author as a young boy: if we (himself and other black people) were the slaves, then why are they (white people) angry with us? This led Dr. Davis through decades of studies in psychology and sociology. Davis has a fascinating way of breaking down extremely complex and emotionally-charged issues of race into underlying theories of causes that can be more directly addressed. He calmly and clearly lays out factual counter-arguments to many of the arguments that, per the title of this book, attempt to blame black people for their own social inequality.

Two hundred forty-six years of slavery in this country!!!
By DJVS
This is an eminently readable book that makes it possible to talk about race in new ways. Dr. Davis' personal experiences/stories coupled with the sense he makes of those experiences through a social psychology lens is extremely effective in both catching the reader's attention and educating him/her. I showed the book to my beautician and she opened to a random page and said, "Wow! Two hundred forty six years of slavery in this country followed by one hundred years of Jim Crow? No wonder we're so f....d up in this country about race." An example of the impact of just one incredible fact in the book. Everyone should read this book!
