Do you feel lost? Confused? Alone? (Circle one): Yes or No.

The Church of Blue can help. We are not a cult.

$5 for a holy quest is a good deal.

Since sixth grade, Debbie Woodlawn has nursed a secret, heart-searing crush on her best friend, Lisa. But all those years of pretending to enjoyFull Housereruns and abstinence rallies with Lisa go down the drain when her friend hooks up with Norman, the most boring guy at school. This earth-shattering event makes Debbie decide to do the unthinkable: confess her love to Lisa. And she has to do it tonight―before Lisa and Norman go past “the point of no return.”

So Debbie embarks on a quest to find Lisa. Guiding the quest are fellow students/detention hall crashers Emma and Tim, the founding (and only) members of the wacky Church of Blue. Three chases, three declarations of love, two heartbreaks, a break-in, and five dollars worth of gas later, Debbie has been fully initiated into Bluedaism―but is there time left to stop Lisa and Norman from going too far?

From Booklist
Outrageous, irreverent, and spiritual, Debbie, 16, has long had a secret crush on her best friend, Lisa, so she tags along to Lisa’s Active Christian Teens group in their Des Moines, Iowa, suburb. But after Lisa hooks up with a macho guy, Debbie joins fellow students Emma and Tim in their made-up religion, the Church of Blue, and together, they embark on a holy-quest checklist that leads them through a wild series of adventures, including breaking into a church and finding a naked couple making out in the coat room. Nonbelievers will have fun with Debbie’s contemporary first-person narrative and her wry view of orthodox religion (“Sometimes unanswered prayers are God’s greatest gifts”), and many readers will relate to the good girl who thinks it “feels good to become a bad-ass” and screams the f-word. In the climax, she overcomes her shame, reveals her crush, and realizes that the quest might help her find love with another girl. Many readers will relate to the story’s underlying question: What does normal mean? Grades 10-12. --Hazel Rochman

You may go to hell for this book, but it's really good.
By Wayne S
Sex, swearing, nudity, girl-on-girl kissing, and all sorts of thing that the local neo-conservatives will probably think damn you to hell. This takes place in Iowa - wonder if the GOP candidates will have to comment on it before the Iowa caucus? SJ Adams is really Adam Selzer, whose books have been challenged before. This is WAY edgier than his other ones, but it's funny, though-provoking, and has a lot of heart. Great book for weirdos, geeks, and teenagers who are dealing with questions about faith and religion. Aren't they all?

According to the good folks at The American Heritage Dictionary, a spark is "an incandescent particle," "a glistening particle of something, as metal," or "a flash of light; especially, a flash produced by electric discharge." But according to Emma and Tim, two high school misfits in Des Moines, Iowa, a spark is the "spark of blue" that everyone has inside of them , given by Blueda, visible only to those practicing Bluedaism, and capable of creating amazing things if it encounters a complementary spark of blue in someone else. This made-up religion of the two best friends is the fulcrum of the novel and the result of both of their decisions to kick destructive habits (eating disorders for Emma and drinking for Tom).

A shy teen, Debbie Woodlawn (and her religion) is the complete opposite of Emma and Tom. Since middle school, she has attended Active Christian Teens with her best friend, Lisa, a conservative Christian. And she's also watched hour upon hour of Full House reruns with her, eaten with her, hung out with her, watched movies with her . . . and pretended to like boys with her.

Actually, Debbie has secretly harbored a painful crush on Lisa for years, pretending to believe everything they tell her in Active Christian Teens meetings, pretending to like Full House, and hiding her real beliefs and preferences just so she can be around Lisa. When Lisa begins dating the most boring guy in school, Debbie is distraught. But then Emma and Tom step in, inviting Debbie on a $5 holy questan introduction to Bluedaism. From the beginning of the quest onwards, Sparks is a roller coaster ride. Everything imaginable happens, from meeting bowling alley skanks and praying, to naked angels on tricycles.

If any of this sounds fun, that's because it is. Sparks is, quite simply, a fun read. The trio of Bluedists go on side trips and adventures on their way to helping Debbie express her love for Lisa, and each one is more ridiculous than the last. This book is definitely a page turner, if only because you want to read what incredibly crazy thing Debbie, Emma, and Tom are going to do next. And you'll definitely know what they're doing, because S.J. Adams's descriptions are so vivid and precise it feels like you're reading in Technicolor. The plot is so fast-paced and surprising that even if you know how the story's going to end up, you're willing to suspend disbelief and go along for the ride.

And by chapter three, you will pretty much know how the story's going to end up. Sure, there are some minor hiccups along the way, but for the most part, the plot follows the typical young adult hero template. Except this time it's not a young girl during the Holocaust or an Indian student attending Harvard, but a teenaged lesbian in love with her best friend.

Basically, don't look to Sparks to stir up deep thoughts. First off, books aren't the best tools for stirring (I'd suggest a spoon), and secondly, it's not going to challenge any of your assumptions, broaden any of your horizons, or rock any of your socks. What I can guarantee it will do is make you laughand kind of want to go on a holy Bluedist quest yourself. So grab Sparks if you're headed for the beach or a long plane ride, and revel in irreverence.

perfect

I loved loved loved this book. I know, how many times can I say love? Seriously, it was fresh, funny and believable in all the best ways without falling back on stereotypes or biphobia, the way most teen lesbian novels often do. It made me laugh and it made me frustrated, but that's the mark of a good book, is it not?

Vivid narrative-driven account of how current U.S. laws against prostitution harm sex workers, clients, and society

Review
"She makes a strong case for broad decriminalization with limited regulation while assessing the effectiveness of other solutions in place, including brothel-only legalization in Nevada, the temporary loopholes in Rhode Island law, the criminalization of clients in Sweden and Germany, and Canadian laws that prohibited communication about prostitution but not the act itself. The book provides a solid overview of the legal ramifications of sex work, and builds compassion for those at the heart of the issue.” —Publishers Weekly

“In her book Getting Screwed: Sex Workers and the Law,Bass surveys the history of laws regulating prostitution in America and abroad. In the past and today, Bass finds, sex workers have been marginalized by stigma that portrays them as immoral, dangerous, even diseased figures. But while the stigma hasn’t changed, the laws have—in many cases, from the point of view of the sex worker, for the worse.”—Pacific Standard

“Bass . . . shows our current approach to commercial sex in the U.S. is dangerous, disingenuous, and an utter failure. . . . Bass illustrates how ending prohibition on consensual commercial sex between adults could reduce rates of HIV and violence against women while also better serving those who are coerced or forced into selling sex.”—Reason

“With gripping narrative, the book reminds readers that sex workers are just as human as anyone else — only working a job deemed shameful and made dangerous by the very policymakers who pledge to protect all constituents.”—The Artery, WBUR

Review
"Getting Screwed takes us behind the beaded curtain tomeet the corporate professionals, mothers, grandmothers, and universitystudents who are the real faces of prostitution inAmerica today. They―andBass―make convincing arguments for decriminalizingthe sex trade and shifting attention to those who exploit theunderage, engagein human trafficking, and target prostitutes for abuse and violence. Bass’sgripping, clear-eyedlook at a marginalized subculture will make you rethinkassumptions about what consenting adults do behind closeddoors." (Deborah Halber, author of The Skeleton Crew)

"Alison Bass is a master storyteller. In Getting Screwed, she takes us convincingly inside the lives of sex workers. Their stories will make you laugh and maybe even cry, but more important, they will make you angry at the laws which unfairly persecute sex workers. Backed up by extensive research and examination of the facts, the stories of these women are sure to challenge anyone’s views about the sex trade." (Karen Osborn, author of The River Road)

"Getting Screwed sums up the many ways we get shafted by everyone, every day; by the cops, courts, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, politicians, preachers, prostitution abolitionists, radical feminists, academics, and so many others. For them, we are an endless source of revenue, political power, and academic achievement. Ms. Bass’s book serves up a much different portrait of us―that of hearty individuals who are capable of speaking for ourselves and fighting for our rights. As she thoroughly documents, the laws impede our ability to keep ourselves safe, and do nothing for real victims. It isn’t that we mind being screwed; it’s just that we prefer being paid for it." (Norma Jean Almodovar, sex workers activist and author of Cop to Call Girl)

Thank you for telling my story...
By Jennifer J. Reed
Alison Bass tells my story alongside many others who have experienced law enforcement harassment and abuse while working in the sex industry. (In my case, a community officer harassed my children as well, and I was working in a legal business as an erotic dancer.) The author does an excellent job of exposing the pattern: use of prostitution laws to intimidate, garner sexual favors from, and arrest the most marginalized groups, even if individuals are behaving perfectly legally. It is time to end the criminalization of adult consensual sex that creates a platform for a myriad of legal system abuses. As a resident of Las Vegas for 7 years, I am also grateful to see the chapter included, "Busted in Sin City: Nevada's Two-Faced Approach to Sex Work." For a city that sells the illusion of sex, it's one of the worst cases of hypocrisy I have ever seen and I am happy to see light shed on it.

vivid stories, eye-opening analysis
By John
Really enjoyed this book -- vivid stories and memorable characters populate Getting Screwed, from Wild West madams to a contemporary sex worker in Massachusetts who grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family. Alison Bass adeptly weaves in policy analysis with expert storytelling, and even if you don't agree with her, the book will open your mind to the possibilities of a society that accepts sex work as a legitimate way to make a living. Read it!

A pragmatic and well drafted narrative about what was once a taboo subject
By Larry Marion
Investigative journalist Alison Bass has ventured behind the curtains to vividly describe how the collision of politics, law enforcement and changing sexual mores have created unintended consequences for prostitutes and society as a whole. Her well-crafted narrative of sex workers’ real-life stories explores all of the disparate elements involved in the sex trade today: disease, sometimes vicious clients, frequently abusive police and prosecutors, hostile neighbors and a society that can’t make up its mind about how, or even if, sex should continue to be criminalized. Indeed, this book is a well-researched and pragmatic call for decriminalizing sex work as well as a riveting read.

Energy Flash: A Journey through Rave Music and Dance Culture, by Simon Reynolds

This work tells the story of rave culture and explores the origins of this dance music, chronicling the ways in which its reverberations have influenced 1990s pop. Examining the music as well as the drugs, the book traces how Chicago house and Detroit techno catalyzed the rave and "Madchester" ferment of 1988-90, then follows the music into the early-1990s. It surveys the confusion of post-rave styles and scenes: jungle, electronica, drum and bass, trance, trip hop, and Big Beat. The book also looks at the role of Ecstasy in the dance-and-drug culture. It includes interviews with Paul Oakenfold, Derrick May, 808 State, Stone Roses, A Guy Called Gerald, The KLF, Primal Scream, Orbital, The Prodigy, Goldie, 4 Hero, Aphex Twin, Tricky, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, DJ Shadow and many more. A CD is included, featuring 15 seminal dance tracks from ten years of rave.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—Light is not an easy concept to convey on a beginning-to-read level, but Pfeffer does a credible job of incorporating just the right amount of detail for these readers. She relates the science concepts she's introducing to scenarios that are in the everyday experience of young children; for example, when explaining lumens, or the units used to quantify brightness, she first discusses how temperature and length are measured. Readers will also enjoy the two easy experiments appended at the end. The colorful illustrations, created with pen and ink, watercolor, liquid acrylic, pencils, and pastels and which include children of diverse races, extend the text well and are marked by several appealing details, such as costumed children carrying glow sticks at Halloween and a glowing octopus. Another book in this series, Franklyn M. Branley's Day Light, Night Light: Where Light Comes From (HarperCollins, 1998), presents the concept of reflective light even more clearly than this title, but Pfeffer's text is shorter and features much more white space on each page, making it especially attractive for beginning readers.—Maralita L. Freeny, District of Columbia Public Library

From Booklist
A companion book to Pfeffer’s Sounds All Around (1999), this simply written volume introduces the properties of light, particularly sunlight. Meisel’s amiable ink drawings, brightened with colorful washes, help make the concepts accessible to a young audience. Topics range from the simple, such as examples of bioluminescence, to the complex, like how light waves bouncing off objects are perceived by the eye and the brain as vision (a process introduced here but not fully explained). After discussing the sun’s light as “waves of electromagnetic radiation, a kind of energy that travels through space,” the text compares the speed of light to that of cars, planes, and sound waves, while a double-page illustration makes the comparisons more real. An appended hands-on section presents two simple science experiments and an activity related to shadows. An attractive addition to the dependable Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan

So glad for new LRAFOS books!!
By Margaret C.
One of the things that I have discovered since using the Memoria Press Curriculum, especially their book lists for Social Studies & Science Resources is the Let's Read and Find Out Science series. We have started quite a collection and my girls really enjoy these. While not yet reading them on their own, they truly enjoy pouring over the illustrations and ask me questions so that I know their little brains are turning vying for information and learning.

When I saw a new one in the series, part of a The World Around Us sub-series, I was delighted to get my hands on an advanced copy for review. We have truly enjoyed these introduction to science topics and I look forward to new titles in the next Memoria Press Curriculum list. Now finally, HarperCollins is releasing new titles in this series. I'm delighted to read Light is All Around Us, a stage 2 book to explore more challenging concepts for children in the primary grades.

I truly enjoyed this book on light and I think it makes a great addition to our shelf. It discusses natural light to man-made light and animal chemical light in between. From light measured in lumens to how our eyes and brains receive and perceive light this little book, in a simple manner, covers a lot of information. Then at the end are a couple of experiments to bring the information to life in example.

Nicely presented...
By CES Penname
Used this in a weekly STEAM-centered curriculum on Light & Shadow presented for, 'Family Inventors Lab' - geared towards 3 - 7 year olds. Kids loved it. Several parents asked for the title. I liked the illustrations and the way the subject was presented in the overall context.
