Review
"She makes a strong case for broad decriminalization with limited regulation while assessing the effectiveness of other solutions in place, including brothel-only legalization in Nevada, the temporary loopholes in Rhode Island law, the criminalization of clients in Sweden and Germany, and Canadian laws that prohibited communication about prostitution but not the act itself. The book provides a solid overview of the legal ramifications of sex work, and builds compassion for those at the heart of the issue.” —Publishers Weekly

“In her book Getting Screwed: Sex Workers and the Law,Bass surveys the history of laws regulating prostitution in America and abroad. In the past and today, Bass finds, sex workers have been marginalized by stigma that portrays them as immoral, dangerous, even diseased figures. But while the stigma hasn’t changed, the laws have—in many cases, from the point of view of the sex worker, for the worse.”—Pacific Standard

“Bass . . . shows our current approach to commercial sex in the U.S. is dangerous, disingenuous, and an utter failure. . . . Bass illustrates how ending prohibition on consensual commercial sex between adults could reduce rates of HIV and violence against women while also better serving those who are coerced or forced into selling sex.”—Reason

“With gripping narrative, the book reminds readers that sex workers are just as human as anyone else — only working a job deemed shameful and made dangerous by the very policymakers who pledge to protect all constituents.”—The Artery, WBUR

Review
"Getting Screwed takes us behind the beaded curtain tomeet the corporate professionals, mothers, grandmothers, and universitystudents who are the real faces of prostitution inAmerica today. They―andBass―make convincing arguments for decriminalizingthe sex trade and shifting attention to those who exploit theunderage, engagein human trafficking, and target prostitutes for abuse and violence. Bass’sgripping, clear-eyedlook at a marginalized subculture will make you rethinkassumptions about what consenting adults do behind closeddoors." (Deborah Halber, author of The Skeleton Crew)

"Alison Bass is a master storyteller. In Getting Screwed, she takes us convincingly inside the lives of sex workers. Their stories will make you laugh and maybe even cry, but more important, they will make you angry at the laws which unfairly persecute sex workers. Backed up by extensive research and examination of the facts, the stories of these women are sure to challenge anyone’s views about the sex trade." (Karen Osborn, author of The River Road)

"Getting Screwed sums up the many ways we get shafted by everyone, every day; by the cops, courts, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, politicians, preachers, prostitution abolitionists, radical feminists, academics, and so many others. For them, we are an endless source of revenue, political power, and academic achievement. Ms. Bass’s book serves up a much different portrait of us―that of hearty individuals who are capable of speaking for ourselves and fighting for our rights. As she thoroughly documents, the laws impede our ability to keep ourselves safe, and do nothing for real victims. It isn’t that we mind being screwed; it’s just that we prefer being paid for it." (Norma Jean Almodovar, sex workers activist and author of Cop to Call Girl)

Thank you for telling my story...
By Jennifer J. Reed
Alison Bass tells my story alongside many others who have experienced law enforcement harassment and abuse while working in the sex industry. (In my case, a community officer harassed my children as well, and I was working in a legal business as an erotic dancer.) The author does an excellent job of exposing the pattern: use of prostitution laws to intimidate, garner sexual favors from, and arrest the most marginalized groups, even if individuals are behaving perfectly legally. It is time to end the criminalization of adult consensual sex that creates a platform for a myriad of legal system abuses. As a resident of Las Vegas for 7 years, I am also grateful to see the chapter included, "Busted in Sin City: Nevada's Two-Faced Approach to Sex Work." For a city that sells the illusion of sex, it's one of the worst cases of hypocrisy I have ever seen and I am happy to see light shed on it.

vivid stories, eye-opening analysis
By John
Really enjoyed this book -- vivid stories and memorable characters populate Getting Screwed, from Wild West madams to a contemporary sex worker in Massachusetts who grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family. Alison Bass adeptly weaves in policy analysis with expert storytelling, and even if you don't agree with her, the book will open your mind to the possibilities of a society that accepts sex work as a legitimate way to make a living. Read it!

A pragmatic and well drafted narrative about what was once a taboo subject
By Larry Marion
Investigative journalist Alison Bass has ventured behind the curtains to vividly describe how the collision of politics, law enforcement and changing sexual mores have created unintended consequences for prostitutes and society as a whole. Her well-crafted narrative of sex workers’ real-life stories explores all of the disparate elements involved in the sex trade today: disease, sometimes vicious clients, frequently abusive police and prosecutors, hostile neighbors and a society that can’t make up its mind about how, or even if, sex should continue to be criminalized. Indeed, this book is a well-researched and pragmatic call for decriminalizing sex work as well as a riveting read.
