David J. Pelzer's mother, Catherine Roerva, was, he writes in this ghastly, fascinating memoir, a devoted den mother to the Cub Scouts in her care, and somewhat nurturant to her children--but not to David, whom she referred to as "an It." This book is a brief, horrifying account of the bizarre tortures she inflicted on him, told from the point of view of the author as a young boy being starved, stabbed, smashed face-first into mirrors, forced to eat the contents of his sibling's diapers and a spoonful of ammonia, and burned over a gas stove by a maniacal, alcoholic mom. Sometimes she claimed he had violated some rule--no walking on the grass at school!--but mostly it was pure sadism. Inexplicably, his father didn't protect him; only an alert schoolteacher saved David. One wants to learn more about his ordeal and its aftermath, and now he's written a sequel, The Lost Boy, detailing his life in the foster-care system.
Though it's a grim story, A Child Called "It" is very much in the tradition of Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul and the many books in that upbeat series, whose author Pelzer thanks for helping get his book going. It's all about weathering adversity to find love, and Pelzer is an expert witness.

Grade 9 Up?This autobiographical account charts the abuse of a young boy as his alcoholic mother first isolates him from the rest of the family; then torments him; and finally nearly kills him through starvation, poisoning, and one dramatic stabbing. Pelzer's portrayal of domestic tyranny and eventual escape is unforgettable, but falls short of providing understanding of extreme abuse or how he made his journey from "Victim to Victor." It takes some work to get past the poor writing and the self-aggrandizing back matter, but the book tries fervently to provide a much-needed perspective. One of the greater obstacles to healing for males is admitting that they have been victims, especially if their perpetrator is a woman. This author has overcome that obstacle and succeeded in life by such masculine norms as joining the Air Force and receiving awards for his volunteerism. However, while personal accounts of child maltreatment provide crucial information about the realities of childhood, youngsters need insight and hope in order to digest the raw material of abuse. Once I started reading this book, I did not ...

Once I started reading this book, I did not want to put it down. I am so grateful for having discovered, ' A Child Called It", as I was severely abused from the ages 5 to 17 years old. This book has started an inner healing process.As I started reading, I started crying, crying so loudly that I started wailing. Uncontrollable tears rolling down my cheeks, and many, many tissues. I applaud Dave Pelzer for using his torturous past to help bring healing to so many people. I can not wait to read his other books. If you can read this review Dave, I want to say Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you.

Difficult

It took me a long time to read the book. I had to put it away many, many times. My own life has so many similarities. In a different way, with different people, but the outcome is the same. And the struggle to survive is too. The daily struggle to regain your life and to believe you are worth something. That.
Thanks Dave Pelzer, for your courage to put into words what you went through and in doing so helping people like me.

This story will shake you to the core and the words will haunt you...

Many years ago when this book first became available I was able to buy both this and the second story but did not get to read the last book written by Dave Pelzer.
This was the first story of child abuse I'd read and everything that is written in this book haunted me for many years after.
Every word in this tragically detailed story will consume you, will grip you with white knuckled fury and not let go until the last page is devoured. Reading this story will also certainly bruise your soul as it deeply hurts your heart to read what an innocent child has endured in life at the hands of his own mother and father.
The words in this story paint a beautiful picture of a happy and loving family in the first chapter and it makes you wonder how all that can change, what happened to change this little boy's world into such a nightmare?
Numerous times while reading this book I had to stop so that my mind could mentally wrap around the words, to form a picture of what I had just read and try to understand *how* this could happen (my mind analyzes everything and some things I cannot fathom but still my mind will try to understand how or why). Many events in this story made me nauseous reading them and many more tears were shed from the first words to the last ones written in this book.
This is not a story that is meant for anyone with a sensitive heart because it will shake you to the core and the words will haunt you for many years afterward.
My *mother* has the same vile hatred towards me and a combination of mental illness with addictions I have witnessed what true demons look like. The abuse I endured throughout life was nothing to this extent, but still, no child deserves to be afraid or abused. Now I am a mother and reading this book again has shaken me much harder than the first time around. Dave Pelzer's words as a child will haunt me for the rest of my life, as every case of child abuse I have ever read surely will. As a mother I will never understand how such vile hatred can exist towards an innocent child.
