Spaciousness: The Radical Dzogchen of the Vajra-Heart: Longchenpa's Treasury of the Dharmadhatu, by Keith Dowman

This famous seminal text of radical Dzogchen provides a profound yet simple poetic statement of how it is to immerse oneself in the matrix of the now and recognize buddha. It is the personal statement of a peerless yogin-adept. Certainly the magic of his poetry impresses us that way and surely this Treasury of the Dharmadhatu, the Choyingdzo, reveals the consummation of Dzogchen. In it we are assured that over and above all the yogas and dhyanas of Hindustan, all the ritual and magic of Tibet and all the quasi religious new-age therapies of the West there exists a simple, timeless manner of being, easy of access, requiring no onerous technique or renunciate lifestyle, that can give us some constant satisfaction in this vale of laughter and tears between birth and dying. With Longchenpa, Dzogchen Ati reaches its most complete revelation; the Choyingdzo is Longchenpa's most revealing statement about the vajra-heart, and Keith Dowman has made a fine translation. The pathless path of Dzogchen comes alive in this poetic exposition of the apex of Tibetan mysticism. The form of language, the translation, the use of poetic invention creates as atmosphere of understanding, as if a mahasiddha were writing in Oxford English with a touch of American slang. This is radical Dzogchen not only in the actual teaching itself, but also in the translation that strikes the flint of idiom to create sparks of wisdom that reveal the whole hologram.

Spaciousness 2.0 (The American Edition)
By applewood
This reprinting of Dowman's latest presentation of "radical dzogchen" (translation of Longchenpa's seminal dzogchen text the Choyingdzo) is a revised and slightly improved 2014 edition of a really fantastic little book. As I wrote in my original review, "if I could have just one book this would be it".

So what's different? Besides being much less expensive, at 170 pages it is thicker than the original 2013 Vajra Publications edition (124p.), but most of this is apparently from the use of a larger font and not the addition of more words. I haven't read through this whole new edition to compare it to the old, but at first glance it is formatted more clearly, and so is easier to read. As Keith says in the preface to the new edition, "I have taken the opportunity afforded by publication in America to edit the text again. Passing time has brought new insight and new word preferences. I have also edited out some phrases and sentiments that caused offense to believers in the suppositional buddhist approaches...."

To reiterate this last point he begins with a new title page that declares it is a, "Page of Unbounded Restriction." Which is basically a warning for those who have trouble with the radical dzogchen approach, which seeks to cut through cultural limitations and biases, and simultaneously prepares the reader to appreciate the specialness of the text to follow. In this page the following warnings are presented;

"For Vajrayana Practitioners: who are committed either formally or informally to the gradual dzogchen path do NOT read this without the recommendation of your mentor ("Don't read it unless you are about to practice it!").

For Academics: this material is NOT intended for intellectual consumption (to do so "is commensurate to using the Koran as toilet paper...").

For Dzogchen Chatterers: (those who like to talk and write intending to help clear up other's doubts intellectually rather than existentially), "this material is a very slow poison."

For the Curious: if you find yourself in possession of this book in a hard print form, wrap it up and place it in a high inaccessible place. If in a digital form, "delete it with a prayer: OM AH HUNG!" "

So, for the very few who remain....those who are actually wanting to apply the here and now teachings of dzogchen, welcome to Longchenpa's 14th Century masterpiece. But you already know that. What matters more perhaps is how good is Dowman's translation? For those of us who don't read Tibetan there are only two English translations of this text available; Richard Barron's 2001 Choying Dzod and Keith Dowman's. Personally I like them both, but find Dowman's more accessible, less intellectual and overly careful, more clear and immediate, and down to earth. The cover of this new edition kind of sums up this approach with its simple painting of an indescript horizon below a clear twilight sky. There is really nothing more to say about it, it is open to our own interpretation of it being of dawn or dusk, attractive or not, but it really doesn't matter what we think or care to add to its raw simplicity. This is exactly like dzogchen - the basic experience of awareness, complete and perfect just as it is, without need of further embellishment.

Most shoppers here will already be familiar with Dowman's approach to translating Tibetan. He has been doing this now for over 40 years, and if anything he is just getting better and better at it. More recently he has begun calling his approach "radical Dzogchen", to differentiate it from the more common gradualist presentation grounded in Tibetan Buddhism. As he has said elsewhere, "The whole point of radical Dzogchen is to cut free of Vajrayana and experience spontaneity." As he says in the introduction to this edition, "This all-inclusive view that is the reality of radical Dzogchen is not dependent upon any religious culture..., radical Dzogchen is, after all, as the tradition affirms, what we have always known.... We know it in the same way that we know the pulse in our veins and the touch of the inbreath and outbreath on our nostrils." (p. 17)

To help give a taste of his translation of Longchenpa's poetry I'll open the book randomly and copy what I find and then compare it to the same passage in Barron's version. And, oh yes, the general format of this book is to present the translation of Longchenpa's 13 cantos with a few pages of Dowman's own introduction - which is what really distinguishes this version, since these are most helpful and to the point;

"In the now, luminous mind,
The unremitting sameness of pure presence,
Left alone, just as it is, the wide-open spacious reality,
That is our dharmakaya nature, the sameness of a pristine matrix.
Present in all but recognized only by the fortunate few:
Simply by relaxing into it, its innate disposition is revealed."
(Dowman's translation, Canto 7 Spontaneity, p. 81)

"Awakened mind - timelessly spontaneous and uniform awareness -
the spacious nature of phenomena, just as it is, the naturally settled state,
is dharmakaya by nature, the expanse of primordial equalness.
It is present in everyone but within reach of only a fortunate few.
If left just as it is, it is innately ensured within that context."
(Barron's translation, p. 54-55)

Penetrating the Unexpressable
By mahipal
As I read in another review: "For those who are reaching the far end of Dzogchen". Do you have the ears to listen to this music? Does deep insight into yourself ( and not-self ) made you open and intuitive enough do let yourself be infected by this non-vision? Of course for a race (humans) that is bound to the image and bound to the image of the other about you (social) and furthermore a culture that is bound by achievement and competition it is not easy to ease yourself back into the original intelligent simplicity, that you still are, at some level!

I do not know anything so radical as the seven treasures of Lonchenpa (To my knowledge not all of them have been translated). And I love the commentary of Keith Dowman. It's not simple but never falls into intelectualizing. We are lucky to have been given access to that kind of insight!

P.S. I just read another excellent commentary of Longchenpa with the title "THE GREAT CHARIOT A commentary on Great Perfection: The Nature of Mind, Easer of Weariness".

Poetic Genius
By Book Drawn
This is basically the same book printed under the same title a year previously with a different publisher and different cover. A “Page of Unbounded Restriction” at the front is new and should be read. Aside from that changes are almost imperceptible, but it seems worthwhile repeating the accolades given the previous edition since this is one of those must reads in the Buddhist pantheon. So here for the repeating are the previous comments:

“Longchenpa’s Treasury of the Dharmadhatu has been translated before, but never with more poetic genius. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t a “Look Inside” capacity for this book to gain the flavor of the writing. So here’s a taste:

“Just as all sunlight is considered the nature of the sun, So all experience is the nature of the luminous mind. Identify the spaciousness of the support and location of whatever arises, Including the entire impure, delusory universe, manifest or potential, And everything is suffused by baseless mind and released in the now. Reality is thus defined as the vast space of the matrix of the now, Beyond delusion and nondelusion, beyond nominal meaning.” Canto 6 at page 55, new edition 73.

You get the idea. Combine that with a brilliant commentary and you have a book well worth adding to your Buddhist library. There is a caveat: This is not a beginner’s book, or even for someone with a moderate background, although you might just read it for its poetry charm. This book is for the serious student / practitioner of Buddhism, one who also has a basic understanding of “The Radical Dzogchen of the Vajra-Heart”. This is the apex of Buddhist teachings. Having said that, there are some who will because of their karma quickly understand this teaching. Not so for most of us. This is the kind of book which can be read, put down, immediately picked up again and re-read with as much gain and enthusiasm as the previous time. It’s like listening to great music.

There are thirteen cantos with an introduction to each. Go slowly. Read each and then reflect on it, meditate on it, perhaps even re-read it before going on to the next. You will be well rewarded for your effort.”
