A sweet beginning to a great series

I read this book last after reading the others. Not what I typically do but it just worked out that way and it was kind of nice. The main characters in this book, Tom and Darcy, were mentioned here and there throughout the other books but not central characters.
I felt like I was finally getting to meet two great people I'd heard a lot about.
This book is very good. Sweet, painful at times, mighty sexy and even funny. While I was more invested in the characters in the other stories and I found those plots more gripping, I did enjoy this one.

First in a great series!

A friend recommended this book to me last week. Started reading it on her kindle at work and when I had to hand it back over without finishing the book, I felt like I was going through withdrawal until I was able to get my hands on my own copy!
This story is about Tom and Darcy, two seniors in college, who embark on a romance that's rocky at times. Ah, I remember those days....younger, with insecurities that make you do foolish things and hurt the ones you love.
You get your happy ever after but it's after a series of plot twists and turns that keep you turning the pages.
Immediately downloaded the second book in the series.

I loved how this book was about the craziness of college, ups and downs, and life after college with be able to say its okay if you end up choosing a different path than the one you have planned. The storyline just captivated my attention and once I got through the first two pages I just couldn't stop. This book is definitely a good read.

Meet 2 characters who get their own full book

Kai believes she’s some type of weird telepath. She doesn’t actually get words from someone’s mind, but sees colors as thoughts and feelings. It’s scary and overwhelming and she has to be careful, especially during thunderstorms, to keep her own thoughts from intruding on others. She knows Nathan, her neighbor and friend who works as a county deputy isn’t human, but he denies being a lupi. Someone is killing the Gifted in and around Midland, TX and Nathan is on the hunt.

Originally published in the anthology, On The Prowl, the story takes place 5 weeks after the dragons arrived in the Earth Realm, and prior to the book, Night Season. The pair makes a couple of appearances after this prior to their own full length story in Unbinding.

You could call it a romance, but learning about these characters, a different angle on what the Gifted face during this time and finding the creature responsible for the killings is a larger focus for most of the story. And the reason for the story is to explain their role in the World of the Lupi series. But the romance will make you feel good.

Could you start the series with this book and understand what’s going on? Yeah, I think enough back story is provided and there is no mention of Lily and Rule, whom the majority of the series focuses on. Kai and Nathan haven’t met either character yet.

Can you read Unbinding without reading this first? Yes. Again enough information is provided so you wouldn’t be outright lost. But I think you’d appreciate their relationship and the decision Kai has to make if you do read this first.

Short but sweet

This is a nice companion novel to the Lupi series. I kept recognizing Nathan's name and I realized (finally) that these characters surfaced in Night Season the 4th book in the Lupi series. It was kind of fun to get an idea of how Kai and Nathan met, and how she ended up with Dell as a companion. I read this after Night Season, and I think that was good as it would have been a spoiler in the Lupi series to understand what Kai and Nathan were beforehand.

INHUMAN (World of the Lupi) by Eileen Wilks

SPOILER ALERT

INHUMAN is the September 2012 novella re-release in Eileen Wilks "The World of the Lupi" (originally found in On The Prowl). Inhuman follows the investigation into the deaths of 3 of The Gifted by someone or something not human. Part of the series premise focuses on The Gifted-several races that are inherently magical-of the Blood. Since The Turning a couple of months earlier, the population of Gifted beings had doubled when the power winds strengthened Existing Gifts and revealed Nascent Gifts in others. Prejudism and stereotyping were on the rise, and those with The Gift or of The Blood, were no longer trusted.

Kai Tallman Michalski was a physical therapist in Texas with The Gift. Her ability to see color auras sensing emotions had grown stronger since The Turning and her other powers had increased as well.

Sargeant Nathan Hunter is one of Kai's best friends. Another member of The Blood, Nathan's true nature is not known, and as a friend, Kai had never pushed Nathan to reveal his species. But following an attack against Nathan, Kai knew it was time that she and Nathan were truthful about their shared feelings.

Nathan was lonely and true to his nature, he was the only one of his kind in Texas. He considered Kai his only friend and with that, his feelings and emotions had always fallen onto the side of love and admiration. But with the recent increase in murders, among The Gifted, Nathan's need to protect Kai increased. As a hunter, Nathan has always specialized in finding others and since his Stranding, he has had many incarnations on Earth and his most recent was that of a police officer. Only this investigation would bring him full circle-right back to his front door.

The FBI Magical Crimes Division believes they have found their murderer, but Nathan knows that the investigator holds a deep prejudice against all of The Gifted. When witnesses claim to have seen a particular Gifted in the presence of each of the victims, Nathan will make it his life mission to prove them wrong. Calling in his fellow huntsman, Nathan would discover that there is more to his best friend than he had known.

INHUMAN is a wonderful short story that reflects many of the prejudices from today and yesteryear. While there are no supernatural races roaming the Earth, we can clearly place many of the storyline scenarios into some of our news making headlines when something or someone that is different is targeted by another. Eileen Wilks has written an amazing series with her World of the Lupi and I hope that everyone has a chance to check it out.

During a hard-fought campaign, retrained Angolan Army units led by EO captured Cafunfu - the diamond producing area that funded UNITA's war effort. Eventually, international pressure spearheaded by the UN and the 'blood diamond' lobby, forced EO's withdrawal from Angola which quickly sank back into chaos. EO's next contract was in May 1995 when 200 men were despatched to Sierra Leone where RUF rebels, chopping off people's limbs and engaging in cannibalism, were marching on Freetown. EO smashed the rebels and this led to free and fair elections with a new government being elected. Pressures were again exerted which resulted in EO's withdrawal. In the place of its 200 troops the UN deployed 18 000 soldiers at a cost of US$1 billion per year. Good Informative Reading

Mr. Barlow's book is an excellent source of information on his company and its operations in the 1990's. While not always grammatically correct, the book nevertheless conveys a true picture of the firm and explodes many of the myths and untruths that have been circulated about it. For any reader interested in private military companies this book is a must have.

About the Author

Allen F. Repko, PhD, is the former director of the interdisciplinary studies program in the School of Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he developed and taught the program’s core curriculum for many years. The program is one of the largest in the United States. Repko has written extensively on all aspects of interdisciplinary studies, has twice served as coeditor of the interdisciplinary journal Issues in Integrative Studies, and has served on the board of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS). Though recently “retired,” he continues to write and speak at AIS conventions, where he conducts annual workshops on interdisciplinary program development and assessment. He can be contacted at allenrepko@att.net.

Rick Szostak, PhD, is a professor of economics at the University of Alberta, where he has taught for 31 years. He is the author of a dozen books and 50 articles, all of an interdisciplinary nature. Several of his publications address how to do interdisciplinary research, teach interdisciplinary courses, administer interdisciplinary programs, or organize information in order to facilitate interdisciplinarity. As an associate dean, he created the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Alberta, the Science, Technology and Society program, an individualized major, and two courses about interdisciplinarity. He has twice served as coeditor of the interdisciplinary journal Issues in Integrative Studies. He was president of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) from 2011 to 2014. It's a text book required for my class. The language is easy to understand, sometimes a little too easy. It does the job of a text book and aids my understanding of the material.

Boring, repetitive

Boring, repetitive, and hard to finish. Each chapter seems like a restatement of the last. This book reads as if it's an ongoing justification for Interdisciplinary Studies. Lots of theory and terminology, little in terms of concrete steps to take.

Why, asks Dr. Porkert, shouldn't medical men everywhere have access to the premises and results of this medical knowledge?

In this book he presents a coherent and systematic account of Chinese theories—the system of correspondence that underlies all of Chinese medicine—using a new and precise Latin terminology (with English equivalents provided for most terms) that he devised over the past decade. The book is based directly and exclusively on Chinese sources, including recent Chinese secondary literature.

Chapter 1 introduces the concepts that are the foundation of the system of correspondences—the polar combination yin-yang, which provides a basis for the analysis of all phenomena into complementary groups, and wu-hsing, which Dr. Porkert calls the "Five Evolutive Phases," and which are used to resolve cyclic processes into five temporally and qualitatively distinct parts. In Chapter 2 he takes up concepts which relate the body to the cosmos under the title "Phase Energetics" (y�n-ch'i); these define meteorological, climatic, and immunological factors in health and disease. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on systems of concepts concerned with the body itself. The author has named these systems orbisiconography, sinarteriology, and foraminology. Orbisiconography (tsang-hsiang), the "imagery of functional orbs," describes the relationships of the functional systems within the body. It is not, as Dr. Porkert points out, analogous to but the opposite of Western comparative anatomy. Sinarteriology, the study of energetic conduits (ching-luo), and foraminology, the study of sensitive points (shu-hs�eh), indicate the functional relationships manifested at the body's surface as well as within it. The book's systematic description of these disciplines involved in acupuncture is a powerful antidote to basic misconceptions prevalent in earlier Western writing on the subject.
